Hugo Javier granted 90 days of house arrest in Paraguay
Hugo Javier González Alegre, the former governor of Paraguay's Central Department, has been granted 90 days of house arrest following his discharge from the Hospital Nacional de Itauguá. Judge Carlos Mendoza Peña authorized the measure due to the former official's critical health condition, which includes neurological and physical sequelae following a severe head injury sustained while in prison.
González Alegre, who was sentenced to 10 years for the misappropriation of pandemic-related funds, will serve his confinement at a residence in Emboscada, Cordillera. The judicial order includes the use of an electronic monitoring anklet and requires periodic police patrols to ensure compliance. His legal defense has presented a medical care plan involving 24-hour nursing and physiotherapy to assist in his rehabilitation.
The decision was based on medical reports indicating that while his condition is not terminal, he lacks the autonomy to perform basic daily activities and requires constant assistance. The judge noted that maintaining him in a hospital posed risks of infection, while returning him to La Esperanza penitentiary was unfeasible due to the facility's lack of specialized medical infrastructure.
