Hugo Martins analyzes Omonia ahead of Europa League match against Benfica

AEL coach Hugo Martins has provided an analysis of Omonia ahead of their Europa League League Phase match against Benfica. Speaking to the Portuguese outlet O’ Jogo, Martins described Omonia as the ‘Benfica of Cyprus’ and noted they possess the largest fanbase in the country.

Martins observed that while Omonia is currently on an upward trajectory, the team lacks the same cohesion seen last season due to the integration of new players. He highlighted tactical vulnerabilities, specifically noting that the team struggles during defensive transitions when losing possession in high areas, which could allow a high-quality side like Benfica to exploit counter-attacks.

Regarding individual players, Martins identified Swedish midfielder Muamer Tanković as the most dangerous threat, praising his creativity and ability to make a difference during set pieces. While acknowledging a significant gap in individual and collective quality between the two sides, he suggested that the stature of Benfica might motivate Omonia players to exceed their own expectations.
