Brazil: STF President and Chamber Speaker Address Institutional Stability

Edson Fachin, President of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), emphasized the necessity of democratic loyalty during a seminar in Brasília. He warned that contemporary democracies are often eroded from within through the gradual capture of institutions and the weakening of public trust, rather than by abrupt coups. Fachin stressed that the judiciary must balance the protection of fundamental rights with respect for political debate to avoid becoming a 'government of judges.'

His remarks come amid an institutional crisis at the STF involving investigations into financial fraud and corruption related to Banco Master, a situation that has become a focal point in presidential election campaigns.

Separately, Hugo Motta, President of the Chamber of Deputies, advocated for institutional strength through dialogue and mutual respect between the branches of government. Motta also secured significant political support for his reelection to the Chamber presidency, with the PSB and PDT parties announcing their endorsement. This support, combined with existing allies, brings his coalition to approximately 266 deputies, surpassing the 257 votes required for a first-round victory in the February 2027 election.
