Hugo Motta faces reelection pressure in Brazilian Chamber of Deputies

Hugo Motta faces increasing political pressure regarding his bid for reelection as President of the Chamber of Deputies for the 2027 term. The shifting political landscape in the Brazilian Congress, driven by the growth of right-wing blocs following the 2026 elections, has created new obstacles for his continuity.

Marcos Pereira, president of the Republicanos party, confirmed that there is resistance to Motta’s reelection from the Liberal Party (PL) caucus. While the PL leadership has suggested that their status as the largest caucus entitles them to lead one of the legislative houses, Pereira emphasized that the Republicanos party will support Motta unconditionally and seeks to build alliances through dialogue.

The legislative maneuvering for the Chamber is closely linked to the Senate, where Senator Davi Alcolumbre is also seeking to maintain his leadership position. The final composition of the leadership boards for both houses will depend on complex negotiations regarding party alliances and the distribution of committee roles.
