Hugo Motta gains major support for Chamber reelection

In the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, political maneuvering is intensifying ahead of the 2027 term. A coalition of seven major parties, including União Brasil, PP, PSD, Republicanos, MDB, PSDB-Cidadania, and Podemos, has formally announced its support for the reelection of Hugo Motta as President of the Chamber. This bloc, often referred to as the 'Centrão,' aims to maintain political influence and stability. The PSD has further strengthened Motta's position through the personal endorsement of its leader, Antonio Brito. This movement serves as a strategic counterweight to the growing strength of the PL party, which is expected to hold the largest single caucus in the next legislature.

To protect their influence, ten center-aligned parties are also coordinating to vote on electoral reforms in early November. They are considering models such as the mixed district system or the 'distritão' to mitigate the impact of high-vote 'puxadores' (vote-pullers) from the PL.

On the economic and regulatory front, Hugo Motta committed to addressing the tax adjustment for the Simples Nacional regime by the end of the year. Additionally, the Chamber approved a project to increase the revenue limit for individual micro-entrepreneurs (MEI) and a provisional measure (MP 1370/26) to improve medical education quality through the Enamed exam. For businesses, the deadline to opt into the Simples Nacional regime has been extended to October 15, while the deadline to choose the IBS and CBS tax collection method is October 30.
