Chega appoints Hugo Nunes as new Madeira regional president

The right‑wing Chega party held a series of internal elections across Portugal. In Madeira, deputy Hugo Nunes was elected president of Chega/Madeira with 94% of the vote, pledging a stronger youth focus, the creation of a regional youth commission and a firm opposition stance. He criticised a disruptive incident at the party headquarters involving former deputy Magna Costa and said disciplinary procedures were underway.

District elections produced new leaders in several regions. Eduardo Teixeira won the Alto Minho district with 96.9% of the vote, emphasizing mobilisation and party unity. Pedro Lancha secured the Portalegre district presidency with 60.8%, promising to consolidate local structures. José Dotti was re‑elected in Santarém with 39.13%, outlining plans for organisational renewal. Other districts saw incumbents defeated, including Rui Afonso in Porto, João Graça in Faro and Nuno Gabriel in Setúbal. The party’s national leader André Ventura announced that the state should not pay compensation to former prime minister José Sócrates, despite a court ruling.

Party representatives, such as Maria do Carmo Gomes, described the Madeira vote as orderly despite the earlier incident, and highlighted Chega’s autonomist stance for Madeira and the Azores.
