Hugo Sánchez admits error regarding 1994 World Cup tactical instruction
Former Mexican footballer Hugo Sánchez has acknowledged he was wrong to refuse a tactical instruction from coach Miguel Mejía Barón during the 1994 World Cup. During the Round of 16 match against Bulgaria, following the expulsion of Luis García, Mejía Barón requested that Sánchez play as a defensive midfielder to stabilize the team.
Sánchez, known as the ‘Pentapichichi’, admitted in a recent interview that he refused the request at the time, insisting on playing as a forward because he felt he lacked the defensive skills required for the midfield. He stated that he did not want to hinder the team by exposing his defensive weaknesses.
Reflecting on the incident decades later, Sánchez noted that his experience as a manager has given him a new perspective on the coach's decision. He has since offered personal apologies to Mejía Barón for his past behavior regarding the matter.
