Hugo Soares criticizes PS and Chega leaders for political unpreparedness

Hugo Soares, the Secretary-General of the PSD, has sparked political tension in Portugal by accusing the leaders of the Socialist Party (PS) and Chega of being “increasingly similar” due to their perceived populism and lack of preparedness to govern. Speaking at the PSD Summer University, Soares criticized José Luís Carneiro, leader of the PS, for questioning official immigration statistics, labeling it a sign of “total unpreparedness.”

In response, José Luís Carneiro dismissed Soares’ remarks as “levian” and criticized the PSD leader for a lack of executive experience. Carneiro, alongside MEP Francisco Assis, emphasized a “profound difference” between the PS and Chega, arguing that while the PS offers a credible political alternative, Chega seeks to oppose the regime itself. The exchange highlights growing friction between the ruling coalition and the primary opposition parties regarding immigration, social security, and political stability.
