Hugo Spritz Surge in US Bars and Restaurants

The Hugo Spritz, an Alpine‑origin cocktail from South Tyrol created in the early 2000s, is rapidly overtaking the Aperol Spritz in the United States. A New York Times story highlighted how the drink – light, floral and served with ice, lime and mint – appears on nearly every table in New York bars, according to bartender Daniel Pride.

In the Washington‑DC suburbs, eight Northern Virginia venues—including Café Monet, Mia’s Italian Kitchen, Stellina Pizzeria and Liberty Tavern – now feature the Hugo Spritz on their menus, offering both happy‑hour specials and brunch deals. The articles also provide the standard recipe: elderflower liqueur, Prosecco, soda water, ice, mint and a lime slice.

The trend reflects a broader consumer shift toward fresher, less bitter aperitivo drinks, with the Hugo’s elderflower flavor appealing to guests seeking a floral alternative to traditional Italian spritzes.
