Huila authorities rescue rattlesnakes intended for illegal medicinal products
Authorities in Hobo, Huila, rescued five live rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) during an operation aimed at preventing wildlife trafficking. The Corporación Autónoma Regional del Alto Magdalena (CAM) and the Police conducted the raid at a residence to stop the animals from being sacrificed for illegal commercial use.
During the operation, officials seized two musculoskeletal structures of the species, two jars of pulverized material, and 40 capsules containing snake-derived components. These products were reportedly being marketed under the false claim that they could treat cancer.
Veterinarian Andrés Felipe Triana Sotto of the CAM emphasized that there is no scientific evidence to support the use of snake tissues or powders as a treatment for cancer or other diseases. Authorities noted that such practices fuel the illegal wildlife trade and threaten local biodiversity.
