Huila confronts informal labor as formal employment remains a challenge

The Huila department in Colombia relies heavily on commerce, services and agriculture for its economy. While these sectors generate many jobs, a large share of agricultural work remains informal, leaving thousands of workers without social security, stable contracts and other labor protections.

The Chamber of Commerce of Huila is promoting programs to boost productivity, provide digital transformation support and offer training for entrepreneurs. It urges the state to simplify procedures, broaden credit access and create incentives that encourage small businesses to formalise their workforce. Strengthening technical and technological education is also highlighted as essential for improving productivity and securing dignified employment.

Officials argue that the region’s future growth depends on building a competitive, innovative business fabric that offers formal, decent jobs and integrates workers into the financial system.
