Huillín species rediscovered in Los Alerces National Park

Evidence of the huillín, an endangered semi-aquatic mammal also known as the river otter, has been discovered in Los Alerces National Park after a 40-year absence. Monitoring efforts by the Park Ranger Corps and Conservation area specialists identified traces of the species in the Grande River, located in the southern sector of the protected area.

The species, scientifically known as Lontra provocax, serves as a vital bioindicator of the health of freshwater ecosystems in Patagonia. While no reliable records of the animal existed in the park since the 1980s, sporadic sightings in 2019 suggested a potential return. Recent systematic monitoring of tracks, dens, and sightings has confirmed a progressive recolonization process.

Conservation authorities noted that information provided by local residents, guides, and navigators was essential in directing patrols. The return of the huillín highlights the need for reinforced environmental protections, including stricter controls on fire use, waste management, and pollution prevention along riverbanks.
