Huinganco, Argentina, expands tulip production and tourism
The town of Huinganco in northern Neuquén is experiencing a resurgence in tulip cultivation, with 16,600 bulbs planted for the current season. This initiative, centered around the Provincial Nursery of Huinganco, integrates local production, specialized knowledge, and tourism through the “Huinganco Florece” activities held in October.
The local tradition traces back over two decades to a resident named Doña Ramona, who originally grew the flowers as ornamental plants in her garden. Today, the project has evolved into a significant driver for regional development, utilizing the mountainous landscape to cultivate a species that historically traveled from Central Asia through Persia and the Ottoman Empire before becoming a global phenomenon.
