Huixquilucan launches weapon exchange program

The government of Huixquilucan, in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and the State of Mexico Security Secretariat, has launched the ‘Canje de Armas 2026’ program. The initiative aims to reduce domestic risks and promote a culture of peace by removing firearms, grenades, and ammunition from homes.

The campaign is scheduled to take place in two periods: from Monday, August 17 to Saturday, August 22, and from Monday, August 24 to Saturday, August 29. Participants can surrender weapons voluntarily and anonymously in exchange for cash incentives based on an official scale. Depending on the type of item—ranging from artisanal or sports firearms to artillery and grenades—incentives can exceed 22,900 pesos.

Mayor Romina Contreras Carrasco stated that the priority is to protect the integrity of local families and decrease violence levels. Additionally, the program includes an exchange where war-themed toys, such as pellet guns or toy tanks, can be traded for educational materials for children to discourage violent behaviors from an early age. All surrendered items are destroyed publicly by specialized SEDENA personnel.
