Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine features restricted Hill of Three Waters
The Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine, located near Hibbing in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, is the world’s largest open-pit iron mine. In operation since the late 1800s, the mine has played a significant role in steel production and supplied approximately one-quarter of the iron ore required by the U.S. military during World War I and World War II.
Situated in the center of the mine is the Hill of Three Waters, a unique geological feature acting as a triple divide. At this location, two continental divides intersect, allowing water to drain into three distinct watersheds: north to Hudson Bay, east to the St. Lawrence Seaway, and south to the Gulf of Mexico.
Due to the nature of the mining operations, the hill is generally inaccessible to the public, with access granted only under special circumstances requiring specific credentials or clearance. However, a public overlook is available near the mine for those wishing to view the area.
