Hulu announces ‘Clown Panic’ documentary about 2016 clown craze

Hulu has released a trailer for the new documentary ‘Clown Panic’, scheduled to premiere on October 12, 2026. Directed by Oscar nominee Ed Perkins and produced by Jonathan and Simon Chinn, the film examines the 2016 phenomenon where reports of mysterious clowns in South Carolina escalated into a nationwide moral panic.

The documentary explores how sightings of figures in clown costumes, initially reported in a quiet South Carolina town, spread across all fifty states via social media and news coverage. This surge led to police investigations and school lockdowns. The film features interviews with witnesses, law enforcement, cultural historians, and professional clowns to analyze how social media algorithms and national anxiety transformed an urban legend into a mass hysteria event.
