Hulu documentary explores 2016 U.S. clown sighting phenomenon

Hulu has released a new documentary titled ‘Clown Panic’, directed by Ed Perkins, which examines the 2016 wave of clown-sighting reports that spread across the United States. The film traces the phenomenon from its origins in a small South Carolina community, where reports of figures in the woods led to school lockdowns and police investigations, to its evolution into a national and global media event.

The documentary explores the intersection of viral internet culture, social media, and public anxiety. It features archival footage, interviews with witnesses, law enforcement, and cultural commentators to investigate whether the sightings were genuine threats, publicity stunts, or a manifestation of mass hysteria. One featured segment highlights how local residents formed community patrols, equipped with walkie-talkies and megaphones, to protect their neighborhoods during the height of the panic.
