Hulu releases documentary on the 2016 clown panic phenomenon

Hulu has released the documentary “Clown Panic” as part of its “Huluween” programming. The film examines the 2016 phenomenon in the United States where widespread reports of clown sightings caused significant public unease and trauma.

The documentary explores the cultural roots of coulrophobia, tracing the influence of fictional characters like Stephen King’s Pennywise and real-life figures such as serial killer John Wayne Gacy. It also analyzes how the 2016 trend was fueled by social media, viral pranks, and individuals attempting to promote independent film projects or businesses, noting the distinction between harmless stunts and more disturbing incidents.
