Humacao advances reconstruction of sports and beach facilities

Efforts are underway to reconstruct several recreational and sports facilities in Humacao, Puerto Rico, that have remained damaged since Hurricane Maria. In the Villa Universitaria community, officials are working to restore the sports facilities at the Luz A. Cruz de Santana School, which serve both students and local residents.

Additionally, an agreement between the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) and the municipality of Humacao aims to accelerate the reconstruction of the Punta Santiago Beach and Vacation Center. This project involves a projected $16.18 million investment in federal funds to repair cabins, pumping systems, water parks, and other infrastructure. Approximately $2.09 million of this investment is designated for mitigation and resilience measures, including coastal protection and drainage improvements.

A separate $19.8 million project is also planned to replace the Punta Santiago pier with a new structure featuring treated wood decking.
