Humahuaca to host first ‘Ruta del Picote y Tejido’ artisanal event

The first ‘Ruta del Picote y Tejido’ will take place on Thursday, October 8, at the Monument to the Heroes of Independence in Humahuaca. Supported by the Provincial Secretary of Culture, the event aims to highlight artisanal production in the Quebrada communities and preserve traditional weaving techniques and ancestral knowledge.

Visitors will be able to explore community crafts and textile art techniques, including working with llama and sheep fiber. The event will feature more than 50 pieces of artisanal weaving and ‘picote’, accompanied by music and dance. Weavers from Uquía, Humahuaca, Aparzo, Iturbe, Tres Cruces, Varas, Cianzo, and Hornaditas will participate.

Coordinator Carla Gerez stated that the initiative seeks to create a network connecting weavers with cultural industries and family agriculture to promote the commercialization of ‘picote’. The project aims to foster local development, the cultural economy, and tourism while ensuring that the knowledge of elderly weavers is passed down to future generations.
