Human activity linked to 97% of European wildfires

A study focused on Europe indicates that human activity is responsible for approximately 97.5% of wildfires recorded between 2000 and 2016. While climate change creates environmental conditions that facilitate the spread of flames, the initial ignition is frequently linked to human factors rather than natural phenomena like lightning.

In Spain, statistics show that 84.31% of wildfires were attributed to negligence, carelessness, or arson. The term “human-caused” encompasses a broad spectrum of actions, ranging from accidental sparks and negligent behavior to deliberate arson. While lightning remains a primary natural cause of ignition, its contribution is significantly lower across much of Europe, including the United Kingdom, where fire service records show only a small number of lightning-induced wildfires.
