Human facial flushing explained by nervous‑system study
Facial flushing, commonly seen in embarrassment or anxiety, is an involuntary response triggered by the sympathetic nervous system. When adrenaline is released, heart rate rises and facial blood vessels dilate, causing the skin to turn red. The reaction is automatic and does not require complex social cognition.
A recent study involving researchers from Italy, the Netherlands and France – including Dr. Milica Nikolic and the National Institute of Agronomic Research linked to the University of Tours – confirmed that the mechanism is shared with other primates and even chickens. The work highlights evolutionary roots of the response as a basic signal of emotion rather than a purely social construct.
