Human memory phenomena: From the Mandela effect to hypermnesia

Psychological and neurological phenomena illustrate the complexities of human memory, ranging from collective errors to extraordinary precision. The Mandela effect occurs when large groups of people share the same false memory, such as misremembering Nelson Mandela’s death or specific movie quotes. Psychologists explain this through reconstructive memory, where the brain fills in gaps or is influenced by external information.

In contrast, hypermnesia, also known as Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM), involves the ability to recall personal life events with extreme detail. First described scientifically in 2006, individuals with this condition can recall specific dates, weather, and activities from years prior. While seemingly advantageous, some individuals describe the condition as an overwhelming burden due to the constant repetition of both happy and traumatic memories.
