Human Remains Discovered on Tenerife’s Garachico Coast May Be Civil War Victim

Human skeletal remains were uncovered on the cliffs of Garachico on Tenerife’s north‑west coast on 26 July after a cliff collapse revealed a semi‑buried jaw and part of a femur. Local police secured the site and the Guardia Civil established a cordon while forensic experts ruled out a pre‑Hispanic origin. An inspector from the Canary Islands Cultural Heritage department, Eduardo Mesa, suggested the bones could belong to a person executed during the Franco regime’s reprisals in the Spanish Civil War. Authorities plan a detailed archaeological excavation on 28 July with a specialist in the national wartime period to determine the exact age and context, noting that a mass grave has not been excluded. Mesa emphasized the need to protect the site from disturbance or looting while further analysis proceeds.
