Human remains found in car wreck in Peene River

Police in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have discovered a car wreck containing human bones in the Peene River near Gützkow. The vehicle, which was found at a depth of three to four meters and covered in mud and mussels, was recovered by police divers after being spotted by a boat operator.

Authorities are investigating whether the remains are linked to a missing person case from 1994 involving a 25-year-old fisherman. In 2004, other human remains were found in the same river and later identified via DNA as the missing man, though no evidence of a crime was found at that time. The Stralsund Public Prosecutor's Office is now leading the investigation to determine if the newly discovered bones belong to the same individual and to clarify the circumstances of the disappearance.
