Human remains found in car wreck in the Rhine

Low water levels in the Rhine have revealed a car wreck containing human bones near Königswinter in the Rhein-Sieg district. The vehicle, identified as a Fiat likely produced between 1976 and 1984, was first discovered by the fire department in early August at a location used for emergency boat water intake.

Following the recovery of the wreck approximately two weeks later, police confirmed the presence of bone fragments both inside the vehicle and in its immediate vicinity. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the find to determine if a crime was committed and whether the remains belong to one or multiple individuals.

Police spokespeople noted that investigations are complicated by the significant amount of time that has passed, suggesting the vehicle may have been on the riverbed for decades. At this stage, there are no known missing persons reports directly linked to the wreck.
