Human rights activists in Argentina and El Salvador hold commemorative and protest events
In Argentina, the documentary ‘La noche se quedó sin música’ (The Night Ran Out of Music), directed by Belisario Martínez, was recently screened at the Ateneo Cultural ‘Profesor Enrique Urcola’. The film chronicles the final performance of singer Mercedes Sosa in La Plata on October 21, 1978, at Almacén San José, an event that preceded her exile.
The documentary features contemporary and archival footage alongside testimonies from individuals present during the performance, aiming to preserve a significant moment in Argentine cultural and political history.
In El Salvador, social organizations including COFAPPES, the Feminist Assembly, and the Madres por la Libertad collective held a protest at the Izalco Penitentiary Complex. The demonstration sought to demand the release of human rights defender Ruth López, who has been imprisoned for nearly 500 days.
Protesters characterized López’s detention as political persecution carried out under the country’s current state of exception, alleging that her arrest is a government strategy to silence critical voices and bypass legitimate judicial processes.
