Human rights advocates protest judicial rulings in Argentina and Chile

In Argentina, a group of former political prisoners known as ‘Nosotras’ has issued a letter supporting activist Milagro Sala. The group expressed strong opposition to what they describe as official injustice regarding Sala’s imprisonment, which has exceeded ten years following a 15-year sentence and absolute disqualification confirmed by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. The signatories praised Sala’s leadership of the Tupac Amaru organization in Jujuy, noting its role in developing urban infrastructure including housing, schools, and hospitals.

In Chile, human rights organizations and social groups are intensifying protests against legislative initiatives that seek to grant pardons or reduced sentences to individuals convicted of human rights violations committed during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973–1990). The National Coordinator of Human Rights and Social Organizations submitted a letter to President José Antonio Kast rejecting proposals to benefit over 700 inmates, including approximately 370 convicted of crimes against humanity. The movement aims to block right-wing legislative efforts currently moving through Congress that would facilitate the release of those responsible for extrajudicial executions, forced disappearances, and torture.
