Human rights concerns rise over migrant deportations and transfers

Human rights advocates and officials are raising concerns regarding the treatment and needs of migrants being deported from the United States. In Honduras, the National Commissioner for Human Rights (Conadeh) has called for an investigation into reports that Honduran nationals may have been transferred to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. Conadeh officials noted that up to 50 people may have been moved to Salvadoran territory and emphasized the need to ensure their fundamental rights are respected under international standards.

In Mexico, specialists at an international congress on human mobility highlighted a significant gap in the formal diagnosis of the actual needs of repatriated individuals. While Mexico provides consular support and legal advice, officials warned that deportees often return with minimal social support networks, frequently facing precarious conditions in border cities. Data from the National Institute of Migration indicates a significant uptick in Mexican deportations from the United States in July, though levels remain comparable to those seen in 2012.
