Honduras missing persons crisis: CONADEH urges new legal protection law

The National Commissioner for Human Rights (CONADEH) in Honduras has warned of a persistent crisis regarding missing persons. During a strategic meeting involving the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Ministry of Public Security, and the Public Ministry, Commissioner Blanca Izaguirre identified the phenomenon as being driven by violence, forced migration, human trafficking, and social conflicts.

Izaguirre urged the Honduran government and Congress to urgently approve the Legal Protection Law for Missing Persons and their Families. This legislation is intended to establish effective mechanisms for searching, providing legal protection, and offering comprehensive support to the families of the disappeared.

While official consolidated figures are difficult to obtain, existing records highlight the scale of the issue. Migrant committees estimated approximately 890 cases by mid-2025, including 814 Honduran citizens. Additionally, the Forensic Bank has documented nearly 1,872 genetic profiles from families actively searching for their loved ones.
