Human rights groups criticize university responses to pro-Palestinian protests
A joint report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Amnesty International USA has criticized several prominent universities for their handling of pro-Palestinian student protests. The investigation, which spanned two years and covered 80 campuses, alleges that institutions have suppressed student speech, association, and assembly rights.
The University of Michigan was specifically highlighted in the report for its allegedly punitive response to demonstrations calling for divestment from companies connected to Israel. The report details the use of harsh methods, including disciplinary actions, legal prosecution, and surveillance via private investigators. It also noted incidents involving the use of pepper spray, tear gas, and batons by security officers during campus encampments.
Separately, observers have noted a trend of inflammatory rhetoric and perceived historical ignorance among student protesters at prestigious institutions, including the Oxford Union in the United Kingdom, regarding Middle East affairs and the implications of their slogans.
