Humane Society of the United States Issues Summer Heat Safety Tips for Pets

With summer temperatures and humidity climbing across the United States, heat advisories are in effect for much of the country. The Humane Society of the United States warns that high heat, elevated humidity and strong UV rays can cause heat stroke, dehydration and other temperature‑related problems for dogs, cats and other pets.

The organization advises owners to keep pets in shaded, well‑ventilated areas, provide plenty of fresh water, avoid vigorous exercise during the hottest part of the day, and consider simple cooling treats such as homemade “pupsicles.” It also recommends checking paws for burns, never leaving animals in parked cars, and using cooling mats or damp towels as needed.
