Humanitarian crises persist in Colombia and Venezuela
In Colombia, the humanitarian consortium MIRE+ reports that over 400,000 people have been directly impacted by hostilities in the last year. Due to security dynamics and remote locations, only 50% of these recent victims have been able to access state institutional aid and registries. The country faces a broader crisis with over 10 million people affected by the internal armed conflict, including approximately 6 million awaiting state compensation for lost homes or family members.
In Venezuela, Amnesty International has criticized the government's response three months after devastating earthquakes in the northern region, specifically La Guaira. While official government figures report 6,438 deaths, there is a lack of transparency regarding missing persons, with citizen initiatives suggesting the number of disappeared could exceed 40,000. Victims have reported a lack of institutional support and noted that military and police deployments focused more on territorial control than on rescue operations.
