Humanoid robot pilot launched in New York school district

A United States school district in Salamanca City Central, New York, has started a pilot program that places a humanoid robot in secondary classrooms alongside an artificial‑intelligence tutoring assistant called Optio. The initiative, led by robotics company Realbotix, uses an M‑Series robot that can converse, display facial expressions and interact in real time with students. Optio functions as a virtual tutor and teacher aide, offering personalized support, homework help and 24‑hour assistance in multiple languages.

The pilot, part of the Woz ED STEM Pathway, initially targets a cohort of secondary‑level students and aims to expand to roughly 500 learners in future quarters. Organisers intend to evaluate the robot’s impact on student engagement, learning outcomes and teacher workload, while emphasizing that the technology is meant to complement—not replace—human teachers. If successful, the model could be replicated in other schools and districts.

The project reflects a broader trend in American education to experiment with AI‑driven tools in the classroom, raising questions about pedagogical benefits, privacy and dependence on automated systems.
