Humanoid robotics advances focus on industrial testing and physical dexterity
Developments in humanoid robotics are bridging the gap between experimental research and industrial application. The Fraunhofer IOSB-INA has opened the Humanoid Robots Experience Lab (HREL) in Lemgo, Germany. Integrated into the Smart Factory OWL, the lab allows companies to test humanoid robots in specific use cases and pilot projects to address challenges regarding cost, safety, and integration.
While industry leaders like Elon Musk predict a massive scale of humanoid robot deployment by 2036, current data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) shows only approximately 7,000 units were sold for industrial and professional services in 2025. Much of this current volume is driven by research institutions and tech firms collecting training data for AI models.
In parallel, technical advancements are improving robotic dexterity and physical manipulation. Researchers at the Toyota Research Institute, in collaboration with ETH Zürich, have demonstrated the ability of the upper-body robot Punyo to perform complex tasks using contact-rich whole-body manipulation. By utilizing reinforcement learning and tactile sensing rather than visual input, the system can manage physically demanding tasks, such as lifting and turning a kettle or repositioning large containers.
