Humanoid robots face safety hazards and massive energy demand as market expands

Industry analysts project that up to one billion humanoid robots could be operating worldwide by 2050, with manufacturers already showcasing models for factory, warehouse and home use. Safety experts warn that unlike deterministic industrial arms, these robots rely on probabilistic AI, raising concerns about loss of control. An incident in China where a robot “trod a boy’s abdomen with its foot” and the lack of any serious injury reports so far underline the urgency. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is drafting safety guidelines expected by mid‑2028, while companies such as Germany’s Neura Robotics are designing mechanisms to collapse safely if balance is lost.

A separate analysis by think‑tank RethinkX estimates a nominal power use of ten kilowatt‑hours per robot per day. If a billion units were deployed, the fleet could consume 3,600‑3,700 TWh annually – roughly the current total U.S. electricity generation. More realistic rollout scenarios spread over a decade would add about 300 TWh per year, comparable to the global solar increase in 2025. These figures highlight the potential strain on power grids as humanoid robots move toward mass market.
