Humayun Kabir appointed Bangladesh state minister for foreign affairs

Humayun Kabir has been appointed as the state minister for foreign affairs in Bangladesh. Previously serving as an adviser to the prime minister with the rank of state minister, Kabir has transitioned into a formal Cabinet role.

Kabir’s political background is characterized by extensive experience in the United Kingdom. He previously served as an adviser to the BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and held strategic roles within the British administrative system, including positions at the office of the Mayor of London and the Ministry of Justice under the government of Rishi Sunak.

His appointment has prompted inquiries regarding his citizenship status. While Kabir was a British citizen and previously involved with the UK Labour Party, records indicate he surrendered his ordinary Bangladeshi passport in February 2026 to obtain a diplomatic passport. There is currently no official confirmation from the Bangladesh government regarding whether he has formally renounced his British citizenship.
