Humayun Kabir summoned by West Bengal police over alleged communal audio clip

West Bengal police have summoned Humayun Kabir, founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and MLA for Nauda, to appear at the Berhampore police station on September 21. The summons follows an investigation into a viral audio recording that allegedly contains provocative remarks intended to incite tension between two communities.

Police officials stated that the case was registered on September 14 after an audio recording surfaced, suggesting a potential conspiracy to provoke communal conflict. While authorities have not officially confirmed the identity of the voice in the recording, they suspect it matches Kabir’s. Police intend to seek court permission to collect voice samples for verification.

The legal development occurs ahead of the Reshiganj assembly by-election scheduled for October 6. The by-election was triggered after Kabir resigned from the Reshiganj seat to retain his Nauda seat. AJUP has fielded Kabir’s son, Gulab Nabi Azad, as its candidate for the upcoming vote.

Kabir has denied the allegations, describing the incident as a conspiracy and an attempt to frame him via mobile phone. He characterized the police action as an effort to intimidate voters and has requested an impartial investigation.
