Humberto Gama sentenced to five years for rape and fraud
Humberto Gama, a former exorcist priest from Trás-os-Montes, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison by the Vila Real Court. The conviction covers crimes of rape, fraud, and the continuous usurpation of functions.
Gama, who is in his eighties, was originally detained by the Polícia Judiciária on December 24, 2021. While the prosecution had requested a six-year sentence, the court issued the five-and-a-half-year term. The defendant has denied all allegations, stating he does not know the woman who accused him and remarking, “It costs me nothing to go to prison.”
The case involved allegations that Gama continued to present himself and dress as a Catholic priest and exorcist long after being expelled from the Church in 1979.
