Emergency crews are battling a running grass fire on the Hume Highway near Marulan. The fire broke out around 12:20 pm on Monday, September 21, approximately 2km north of Highland Way. The blaze originated on the eastern side of the highway before jumping to the median strip.
While the highway was initially closed in both directions due to smoke and visibility concerns, one northbound and one southbound lane have since reopened. Rural Fire Service (RFS) Southern Tablelands operations officer Wes Leseberg stated that crews were working to bring the fire under control, though the situation remained at the advice level.
Authorities have warned of drying conditions in the region and noted that the bushfire danger period for the Southern Tablelands is set to begin on October 1. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all directions from emergency services.
