Humidity and respiratory health risks in homes

Household humidity and structural issues are increasingly linked to respiratory health problems. In Colombia, recent seismic activity has reportedly accelerated water infiltration through micro-fissures in homes. These structural damages can lead to persistent dampness, mold, and condensation, which are associated with nocturnal coughing in children and respiratory crises in adults with asthma or COPD.

To combat indoor humidity, particularly during colder or wetter seasons, dehumidifiers are a common technological solution. Experts note that effective devices typically use a refrigeration system to condense water vapor from the air. However, the efficacy of these machines depends on their capacity; small, low-cost models are often ineffective for large spaces, whereas compressor-based models are considered more reliable long-term investments for significant moisture extraction.
