Hummingbird care: Proper nectar ratios and feeder maintenance

To properly care for hummingbirds, it is essential to provide a sugar-water solution that mimics natural nectar. The recommended gold standard is a 1:4 ratio, consisting of one part refined white sugar to four parts water. Using incorrect ratios or alternative sweeteners like honey or brown sugar can lead to dehydration or other health issues.

Feeder maintenance is critical to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. In temperatures above 70°F, nectar should be changed every one to two days, whereas in cooler weather, it may last up to five days. Failure to maintain cleanliness can lead to serious conditions such as aspergillosis, a fatal fungal respiratory infection.

If a hummingbird is found in distress—exhibiting lethargy, drooping posture, or an inability to fly—immediate intervention involving warmth and a sugar-water solution may help replenish its energy reserves.
