Hummingbird migration season offers ways to support wildlife

Hummingbird migration season is approaching, providing opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts to support these birds during their journey to Central and South America. In Alabama, the Ruby-throated hummingbird fall migration is expected to occur between September 27 and October 4, with some coastal areas seeing arrivals between October 4 and 11.

To assist migrating birds, experts recommend cleaning feeders and using a mixture of one part refined white sugar to four parts water. It is noted that adding red food coloring to the mixture is an ineffective practice.

Gardeners can also support migration by planting nectar-rich native perennials in September. This timing allows plants to establish roots before winter. The cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is highlighted as an ideal choice due to its red tubular flowers and high nectar content, which facilitates pollination through the birds' feeding habits.
