Humpback whale and calf recorded for first time in Chubut

Scientists have confirmed the first recorded presence of a humpback whale and its calf within the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park in Chubut, Argentina. The discovery follows a series of observations by the Patagonia Azul Project team.

Biologist Lucas Beltramino reported that the team initially spotted two individuals during a routine navigation last October. While they were able to photograph a dorsal fin, they could not initially confirm the presence of a calf. A follow-up observation five days later, aided by drone footage, revealed three whales swimming together, including one significantly smaller than the others.

Genetic analysis of biopsy samples confirmed that the smaller whale, nicknamed “Huellita” by locals in Camarones, is a male calf. Researchers observed the mother maneuvering to protect the calf from an adult male known to scientists from previous seasons. This finding highlights the biological importance of the Patagonian coast as a refuge and feeding area for the species.
