Humppila municipality replaces director roles with AI

The Finnish municipality of Humppila has replaced the roles of administration director and technical director, in part, with artificial intelligence. The initiative, led by Mayor Minna Ylikännö and approved by the municipal council, has resulted in savings of approximately 150,000 euros (about 172,000 USD).

Under the new structure, technical director duties were redistributed among several employees. The administration director's responsibilities were assumed by Mayor Ylikännö with the assistance of AI agents, which handle tasks such as drafting decision proposals, contracts, and tender documents. Ylikännö noted that drafting internal regulation annexes took only one day with AI, a process that previously would have taken months.

The move highlights broader trends in Finland toward labor automation. The Finnish social insurance agency previously announced plans to reduce its workforce by roughly 1,000 people by 2035 through automation. Additionally, legal experts have suggested AI could soon handle routine police tasks, such as drafting interrogation reports, with greater speed and precision than humans.
