Ukraine passes minority education law to advance EU accession
The Ukrainian Parliament has passed a law regarding the educational rights of national minorities, a move that addresses long-standing concerns from Hungary regarding the rights of the ethnic Hungarian community. The legislation guarantees the use of minority languages in schools where such classes exist and allows for instruction in official EU languages. This decision is seen as a critical step in Ukraine's European Union accession process, as it removes a major obstacle previously cited by Hungary.
Following the vote, EU member states reached a consensus to open the second and third clusters of accession negotiations, specifically focusing on the internal market and competitiveness. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán welcomed the development but emphasized that Hungary will closely monitor the actual implementation of the law to ensure minority rights are protected.
Separately, the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN) is undergoing leadership changes. President Balázs Gulyás and CEO Roland Jakab are set to step down by mutual agreement on October 21, 2026. Dr. András Stipsicz has been elected as the new President of HUN-REN, effective October 22, 2026, serving until a permanent leadership is chosen through an open process.
