China opens exhibition to preserve linguistic diversity
A new exhibition dedicated to the preservation of China’s linguistic diversity has opened at the Hunan Museum in Changsha. The exhibit showcases the results of a decade-long national project initiated in 2015 to document and protect the country’s various languages and dialects.
Through digital and interactive installations, the exhibition features materials collected from over 1,800 field survey sites across China. This includes original audio recordings representing 10 major Chinese dialects and more than 100 minority languages, such as Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, and Zhuang. The collection also includes over 30 cultural artifacts related to linguistics.
Visitors can engage with regional dialects, folk songs, and recordings of endangered languages. Additionally, a new alliance comprising universities and research institutes has been established to promote the use of linguistic technologies in education, scientific research, and cultural conservation.
