Hunan shop owner pays compensation after elderly man dies in parlor

A business owner in Hunan province, China, was forced to pay 19,000 yuan (approximately 90,000 TWD) in what was termed ‘humanitarian compensation’ after an elderly man died while resting in his establishment.

According to reports, the elderly man entered a mahjong parlor to rest after feeling unwell. The female shop owner noticed he appeared unconscious and immediately provided assistance, called an ambulance, and helped transport him to the hospital. Despite these efforts, the man passed away.

The deceased's son subsequently demanded 100,000 yuan in compensation, claiming the shop was responsible because the death occurred on the premises. The family reportedly threatened to place the body in front of the shop if their demands were not met. Although local police and CCTV footage confirmed the shop owner was not at fault, the owners ultimately paid the 19,000 yuan to end the harassment. The incident has sparked significant online debate regarding social ethics and the risks of intervening to help strangers.
