Hunan shop owner pays settlement after assisting elderly man

In Changsha, Hunan Province, a shop owner and his wife faced a legal and financial dispute after attempting to assist an elderly man who collapsed in front of their store. The man, who had several underlying medical conditions, lost consciousness and was subsequently rushed to the hospital by the shop owners. Despite their efforts to call emergency services and provide immediate aid, the man passed away due to acute medical issues.

Following the death, the man's family demanded compensation of 100,000 NDT (approximately 390 million VND), arguing that the shop owners should bear responsibility because the incident occurred at their storefront and they were the ones providing assistance. The shop owners, identified as Mr. Li and his wife, initially offered 2,000 to 3,000 NDT as a gesture of sympathy, which the family rejected.

Authorities reviewed security footage and medical records, concluding that the death was caused by the man's own medical conditions rather than any negligence or actions by the shop owners. To resolve the dispute and protect their business from further threats, the couple eventually provided 19,000 NDT as a humanitarian gesture, though they maintained it was not a mandatory compensation for fault.
