Hunedoara man survives attack by three bears

A 60-year-old man from the Pui commune in Hunedoara County survived an unusual attack by three bears in the Șureanu Mountains. The incident occurred while the man was attempting to protect his cow from the animals. He was rescued by nearby tourists who intervened to drive the bears away, and he was subsequently treated for minor injuries at a hospital in Hațeg.

Experts from the Hunedoara County Environmental Directorate noted that such group attacks are rare, as bears are typically solitary. Officials suggest the group may have been a mother bear accompanied by two cubs. While the man survived, the cow died from its injuries. The victim has approached authorities to seek compensation for the loss of the animal.

Local officials stated that while bears frequently enter households in the area, attacks on humans are uncommon. The incident highlights ongoing wildlife conflicts in the region, where authorities have recently received permission to cull 37 bears to manage the situation.
